My question is : Are the following factors a concern for someone aspiring to join Data Analytics / Business Analytics programs over MS in Computer Science.
1. Short duration of the Data analytics / business analytics masters - The duration of the courses range from 9 months to 16 months. Should I be worried about placements post course completion ? In a CS masters, one has 2 years to complete the course and find a job. Although, a masters degree is offered, the very same universities, offer a certificate course with pretty much the same curriculum and time limit. How in general is the recognition to these 10 month courses ? Aren't international students worried that it's some pressure to find a job in say 3 months ?
2. Flexibility - The programs in data / business analytics is like a package program, with limited or no flexibility in courses and no flexibility in terms of time limit. So, if i want to take a few extra courses, I cannot, and if I want o extend the program by another semester, I cannot. Added to this, some are cohort based, so students start and end at the same time. None of these concerns exist in a MS Computer Science. I can take extra credits, I can complete in 1 year, 1.5 or 2 years. Basically I can take extra courses, apply for internships and be a registered student, until I find a job and I'd also be able to tune the curriculum to include my preferred areas.
Are my concerns unwarranted ? Some have even discouraged me from applying to MS in Analytics because of the fact that I would be left with no more than 2 to 3 months to find a job with a very rigid curriculum.
