We were all appalled and shocked by the news of two innocent Indian engineers shot by a drunk and racist scum where one of them Srinivas Kuchibhotia was killed.

These are very difficult times in the US. No one knows how long this racist, xenophobic and narrow-minded atmosphere will last; but most reasonable people seem to agree that it is not sustainable and ugly and will collapse under its own weight soon. The country has numerous checks and balances at all levels and we are all hoping that these will prevent a repeat of such a tragedy.
But until that happens, we want to caution our Edulixian community to take some sensible measures.
1. Almost all college towns are progressive and broad-minded by nature and definition. Stay around campus at all times if you are in universities in rural areas like VT, Purdue, Penn State etc. Avoid bars and public places where typical racists-types hang out.
2. Avoid lingering in establishments that just don't seem to be welcoming and that are not frequented by a diverse group of students.
3. Travel with a friend of you have to drive through very small towns in the hinterland.
4. If confronted by a racist person, better to outsmart them and walk away. You don't win by confrontation. This may even happen in planes or trains or buses. Report them to flight attendants or person of authority.
In general, use your good judgement and brain and avoid these sort of people. In few years, we will (hopefully) look back and say 'why did some people lose their head with hatred, in this country?'
